IUD

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus to provide long-term, highly effective birth control. As one of the most reliable forms of contraception available, an IUD can prevent pregnancy for three to ten years, depending on the type you choose. Our team is here to help you decide if this reversible, low-maintenance option is right for your lifestyle.

What to Expect: Your IUD Placement

An IUD placement is a routine in-office procedure that typically takes only a few minutes. We prioritize your comfort and will walk you through every step of the process.

  • The Consultation: We begin by discussing your health history and reproductive goals to determine which IUD is best for you. We may also perform a brief exam to ensure proper placement.
  • The Placement: Your provider uses a speculum to view the cervix and then uses a small applicator to place the IUD through the cervical opening into the uterus.
  • The Sensation: Most women experience some cramping during and immediately after the insertion, similar to a heavy menstrual period. This discomfort usually subsides quickly.
  • Post-Procedure Care: After the placement, you can go about your normal activities. We will teach you how to check the thin plastic strings that hang from the IUD into the vagina to ensure the device remains in place.

Hormonal and Non-Hormonal Options

There are two main categories of IUDs available. Your provider will help you choose based on your health needs and how you want the device to affect your menstrual cycle.

  • Hormonal IUDs: Brands such as Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla release a small amount of progestin. These can last between three and seven years and often result in lighter, less painful periods.
  • Non-Hormonal Copper IUD: The Paragard IUD does not use hormones and is effective for up to ten years. It is an excellent option for women who prefer or require a hormone-free form of contraception.

Why Choose an IUD?

An IUD is a popular choice for many reasons, offering a “set it and forget it” approach to birth control:

  • Highly Effective: IUDs are more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.
  • Long-Lasting: Depending on the type, you are protected for 3 to 10 years.
  • Fully Reversible: If you decide you want to become pregnant, your provider can remove the IUD at any time, and your fertility returns to its normal baseline immediately.
  • Low Maintenance: You do not have to remember to take a daily pill or visit the pharmacy every month.
  • Discreet: No one can tell you are using it, and it cannot be felt during intercourse.
