How long is the recovery after a C-section?

Recovery from a C-section is longer than a vaginal birth because it is a major abdominal surgery. You will likely stay in the hospital for 3 to 4 days, and it typically takes 6 to 8 weeks for the incision to heal completely and for you to resume all normal activities.

Will I be awake during the surgery?

Yes. In most cases, a spinal or epidural block is used, which numbs you from the chest down. This allows you to be awake and alert for the birth of your baby without feeling pain. General anesthesia is typically reserved for rare, extreme emergencies.

Can my partner be in the room with me?

Yes. We encourage one support person to be present with you in the operating room for both scheduled and most emergency C-sections to provide comfort and share in the birth of your baby.

Does having a C-section mean I must always have them in the future?

Not necessarily. Many women who have had one C-section are candidates for a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) in future pregnancies. We will discuss your future options based on the type of incision used and your overall health.

What are the risks of a C-section?

As with any surgery, there are risks including infection, blood loss, and reactions to anesthesia. However, our team takes every precaution to minimize these risks, and we only recommend a C-section when the benefits outweigh the risks for you or your baby.

The incision is usually made horizontally just above the pubic hairline (a “bikini cut”). Over time, the scar will fade significantly and is typically easily hidden by underwear or a swimsuit

The Procedure: A C-section typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes. We prioritize your comfort by working closely with the anesthesiology team to ensure you are numb and comfortable while remaining awake to greet your baby.
Family-Centered Approach: Whenever possible, we support “gentle cesarean” options, which may include clear drapes so you can see your baby being born and immediate skin-to-skin contact in the operating room.
Post-Surgical Recovery: Most women stay in the hospital for two to four days following a C-section. Our team monitors your recovery closely, providing pain management and support as you begin the healing process.
